Joe Vogel Evolution – Semicustom Outdoor Knife with Nitro-B Steel

The Joe Vogel Evolution is a knife designed uncompromisingly for demanding outdoor and survival use, born from the collaboration between survival expert Joe Vogel and steel and knife specialist Roman Kasé. Over 15 years of development work by Joe Vogel have gone into its design. Each knife is subsequently hand-finished, ground, and finely honed by Roman Kasé in Switzerland. Thus, the Evolution combines Solingen quality craftsmanship with Swiss precision.

Nitro-B steel at the highest level

The heart of the Joe Vogel Evolution is its 114.5 mm blade made of stainless Nitro-B steel. This nitrogen-alloyed steel combines high corrosion resistance with excellent toughness and edge retention. A specially tuned heat treatment process was developed for the Evolution, bringing the steel to a hardness of 61 to 62 HRC and optimally exploiting its potential regarding edge stability, wear resistance, and toughness.

The heat treatment is initially carried out under vacuum. A subsequent cryogenic treatment at temperatures below -80 °C, along with precisely adjusted austenitizing and tempering parameters, produces a particularly fine microstructure. The average carbide size is only about 3 to 4 micrometers, and the grain size corresponds to ASTM 10. This contributes to long service life and minimal burr formation during sharpening.

Extremely keen, yet robust

Before the edge bevel is applied, the blade is ground to a zero-edge. Only 0.2 mm of material thickness remains at the edge. This allows the blade to glide through material with exceptional ease and provides outstanding cutting performance. At the same time, the finely tuned heat treatment and grinding concept ensure that the slim edge geometry remains robust enough even for demanding tasks.

Handcrafted in Switzerland

Each Evolution is personally processed by Roman Kasé. The profile grinding, assembly, finishing, and the final fine honing on high-quality sharpening stones are done by hand. The grinding process itself was specifically optimized for Nitro-B steel through extensive testing. After hardening, the blade is slowly ground from the solid stock under intensive cooling to ensure the most gentle processing possible and optimal material properties.

Full tang and waterproof Micarta

The full-tang construction ensures a consistently robust connection between the blade and handle. The handle is made of waterproof special Micarta and, with a handle thickness of 20.0 mm, offers a balanced combination of a secure grip and comfortable handling. With a total length of 22.5 cm and a weight of approximately 186.0 g, the Evolution remains handy enough for extended tasks.
