The Glockenhaus in the heart of the city is one of Lüneburg's oldest buildings and looks back on a eventful past. It was built between 1482 and 1483 and served as the city's armory and arsenal in the Middle Ages, where armor, weapons, and military equipment were stored. The massive oak from which these handle scales are made was part of this historic building for centuries and witnessed the Hanseatic period, when Lüneburg prospered through salt trade. Today, the Glockenhaus is a landmark of the city, and its centuries-old oak wood receives a new, functional purpose through these knife handles.
