After World War II, American GIs brought the Mercator knife to America. There it became famous under the name "Black Cat Knife" and still has cult status today. The designation "K55K" has a special meaning: The "K" stands for Kaufmann, the original manufacturer, "55" for Hochstraße 55, the address of the original company, and "K" again for the cat symbol. The embossing is done under a press and is traditionally painted by hand after powder coating.
